GE 7F Compressor Risk Mitigation
There is new OEM guidance for the GE F Class Fleet concerning the nondestructive inspection requirements of the R-0 and R-1 compressor blade dovetails. Although this inspection is not new, the requirement to inspect the components at the next available outage is an update to the OEM recommendations. The misconception is, that if your R-0 blades have the enhanced undercut design, then the OEM recommendations have been satisfied.
Unless the airfoils have been upgraded with undercut R-1 compressor blades, the risk for blade liberation is still present according to the OEM guidance.
To mitigate this risk, the recommendation is to inspect those affected blades at the next scheduled outage. Veracity performs these inspections in tandem with our borescope inspections.
Veracity’s proprietary UTPA technology allows for the highest probability of detection in the industry which mitigates your risk at the first sign of a defect. In the fall of 2020, Veracity detected a R-1 crack in the dovetail that was near the liberation stage thus preventing a failure of the component. Contact us today for more information or to schedule your next inspection.

Nextant Aerospace and Veracity Technology Solutions Partner to bring Aviation-Quality NDT Services to other industries
CLEVELAND, Ohio (September 1, 2020) Nextant Aerospace and Veracity Technology Solutions are partnering to expand their nondestructive testing (NDT) capabilities beyond the aviation industry. While the two companies will continue to focus on business and military aircraft inspections, they will share resources to grow their NDT services in outside markets ranging from power generation and industrial services to amusement park rides. This agreement makes high quality aviation-grade inspections available to a broader range of clients, and it allows each company to increase its expertise without sacrificing individual core competencies.
Nondestructive testing is an essential tool for determining the integrity of a structure without altering or damaging the object being tested. Depending on circumstances, test methods utilize ultrasonic waves, electromagnetic fields and enhanced visual inspections to detect cracks and defects in the material being tested. Many companies utilize third-party NDT technicians to test equipment on a yearly basis, or as part of a scheduled maintenance program.
Nextant Aerospace and Veracity Technology Solutions NDT technicians contribute to many major aircraft inspections. But oftentimes, both companies contract with non-aviation organizations to utilize these technicians for inspections in other industries.
“NDT’s applications outside of aerospace are wide-ranging,” said David Davies, CEO of Nextant Aerospace parent company Constant Aviation. “In addition to conducting major aircraft inspections, Nextant Aerospace technicians travel into the field to perform testing that determines the safety and stability of storage tanks, pressure vessels, roller coaster tracks and more. Starting this fall, we are going to share technicians to better serve all these external industries.”
Nextant Aerospace is dedicating five of its NDT technicians to the partnership program, while Veracity Technology Solutions is contributing 15 technicians. As NDT requests are received, the two companies will work together to dispatch technicians from the pool of 20 to complete each job as efficiently as possible. All technicians are Level II certified, meaning they are qualified to set up equipment, conduct testing and provide on-the-job training.
“The great thing about this partnership is that all the technicians within the pool are highly skilled with Level II or higher certifications, and they are accustomed to working in the demanding FAA-certified environment of aircraft testing,” said Chris Chadwick, Vice President of Emerging Markets for Veracity Technology Solutions. “Clients in power generation, manufacturing and other fields benefit from the use of this pool of technicians because they will receive the most thorough, highest quality inspection available. That provides the client with peace of mind, and it can be a unique differentiator for his or her safety and maintenance programs.”
While their partnership was formed to better serve clients in new industries, Nextant Aerospace and Veracity Technology Solutions will each benefit from the sharing of resources. The pool of skilled technicians allows both companies to expand their reach without pulling staff away from essential projects, and technicians from one company can be paired with those from the other for peer-to-peer training.
“This partnership really works because our businesses are complementary,” said Shawn Ehrhart, Director of Operations for NDT at Nextant Aerospace. “Their team specializes in areas where we can grow, and vice versa. We’re all going to make new contacts and bring our NDT expertise to new clients. And with careful planning, having a pool of technicians ensures we can grow into new markets while maintaining focus on our primary work.”

Increase Detection and mitigate Risk with Veracity's Ultrasonic Phased Array/Eddy Current Inspection Protocol for GE 7FA Stage 3 Buckets
As recent failures of GE 7FA Stage 3 buckets have made the news in industry forums, Veracity wants users to be aware of its efforts in the development of a proprietary advanced inspection protocol to address this emerging issue.
Veracity's inspection protocol combines phased array ultrasonic (PAUT) and eddy current (ET) inspection methods. This dual approach allows Veracity to locate and quantify surface defects caused by internal defects AND detect internal cast defects before crack propagation. Veracity is able to achieve this advanced detection thanks to its VTS2400 medical grade imaging system that boasts a 128 element, 0.007" pitch array that gives the inspector a high fidelity look inside the grain structure of the component.
“While eddy current inspection will detect near surface indications, surface considerations such as impacts and surface condition on the suction side of the blade must be taken into account. Veracity’s medical grade imaging system is capable of detecting internal stress risers such as casting defects before they propagate to the surface. This proactive dual method approach enables the user to make informed decisions regarding further operation," said Kevin McKinley, President of Veracity.
REQUEST A QUOTE OR CALL US AT: 850-520-0052 for more information on how this groundbreaking inspection protocol can enhance your detectability and minimize your risk. Veracity offers a cost saving, innovative inspection to address TIL 1971 and 1972 for cracking on compressor wheels
GE recently released Technical Information Letter (TIL) 1971 and 1972 for cracking on the GE 7F/9F compressor wheels. The cracking, originally thought to be limited to the Stage 17 aft face, has been detected on upstream stages. In February, well ahead of the OEM’s TIL, Veracity partnered with one of their customers to develop, proof and field test a process to detect this cracking. This proprietary inspection has the ability to accurately detect and estimate the size of the cracking giving the operator critical information to understand operational risks.
To address the requirements of this TIL, Veracity can complete the borescope portion to identify visual indications with measurements and report the data to help identify your risk at a fraction of the cost of the OEM. However, for unparalleled visibility and a greater understanding of operational risks, Veracity can perform their proprietary Ultrasonic Phased Array inspection at your next case-off inspection. This inspection accurately detects and estimates the size of the indications propagating both radial and axial in orientation. All data can be collected for subsequent inspections for trending purposes and can be completed in one shift.
When you select Veracity, you're choosing an experienced, qualified and transparent NDE service provider. Additional Cracking Detected on the GE 7EA Fleet
Veracity Technology Solutions has tested and deployed a proprietary technique to detect and quantify the size and depth of cracking on the S-1 airfoils for the GE 7EA fleet. The cracking, originally thought to be caused by clashing, has also been found on stators with no previous signs of contact with rotating components.
Veracity, in partnership with a major utility company undergoing a forced outage attributed to this issue, has developed, validated and deployed an inspection to detect compressor stator cracking. To date, Veracity has detected two units with cracked stators that were previously undetected. The ability to detect these cracks prevented catastrophic liberation of the stators saving the customer millions in lost revenue.
Veracity's technology gives a greater understanding of operational risks since it can accurately detect the size and depth of cracking. This proprietary inspection offers a superior analysis over the penetrant inspection which does not have the ability to determine depth or accurately detect smaller flaws.
Veracity's inspection can be performed in one shift during an outage that would allow access to the compressor section with the blades installed.
Users can call 850-520-0052 to schedule this critical inspection which can be performed during the next scheduled maintenance activity.

Veracity technology Solutions Develop a Field-Tested Ultrasonic Phased Array Inspection to address cracking on compressor disks
Veracity Technology Solutions, an AGC Aerospace & Defense company providing customized nondestructive inspection solutions for aerospace systems and power generation equipment, has developed an inspection to detect cracking on compressor disks. Veracity’s Ultrasonic Phased Array Inspection was specifically used to detect compressor disk cracks in the aft dovetail slots on the GE 7F Gas Turbine fleet.
“Through our partnerships with major utility companies, we have been able to test and deploy a system that can accurately detect and estimate the size of the cracking,” said Kevin McKinley, President of Veracity. “This problem was originally thought to only apply to the Row 17 Disks. However, through further research, we have discovered that the issue appears to affect numerous upstream rows. Veracity’s proprietary inspection is able to quantify the approximate size and location of the discontinuity, providing the operator the information needed to understand the operational risks.”
The inspection can be performed in one shift during an outage that would allow access to the compressor section with the blades installed. “We feel it is important to notify affected users so the maintenance planners have ample time to plan this inspection activity during their next scheduled downtime,” added McKinley. “We will be reaching out immediately to our current customers to schedule this inspection.”
Veracity will be presenting at the 7F Users Group Conference in Denver on May 11-15, 2015, to address questions regarding this inspection activity.

Veracity: Your Risk Mitigation Solution for GE TIL 1884 Clashing and 1854 Tip Loss Inspections
Veracity Technology Solutions will save you time and money with its proven and tested advanced impedance plane analysis eddy current inspection on 7EA compressor blades/stators. Clashing is due to the leading edge tips of the stators coming into contact with the trailing edge platform of the rotating blades. Additionally, the Row 2 and 3 tip losses can occur from corrosion or heavy tip rubbing, which once identified via borescope inspections, can be further analyzed during planned outages.
Detecting more than just cracks
Veracity has worked with numerous utilities during outages to perform advanced eddy current inspections of all rotating and stationary compressor airfoils. We can detect not only cracking but also material property changes such as permeability changes from rubbing, manufacturing imperfections, and corrosion pitting which has contributed tip losses in numerous 7EA units. Any one of these discontinuities can lead to stress risers that, if left undetected, could result in catastrophic failure.
Experienced, Qualified Technicians
When you choose Veracity to perform your 1854/1884 inspections, an inspector with an average of 20+ years NDE experience will come to your site. All Veracity technicians are certified to ASNT-TC-1A Level II in all methods, so there is no need to bring in additional technicians once a clashing problem or blade discontinuity is detected during a borescope inspection. By not having to remobilize, you can reduce your overall inspection cost and maintenance downtime.
Veracity hires qualified, experienced technicians you can trust. All of our inspectors have come from the US Military and were at the pinnacles of their careers prior to entering the Power Generation industry.
Transparent - You see what we see.
All of Veracity’s inspections are open to the end user. There are no “proprietary inspections” where the user cannot see how it is accomplished. We respect your need to understand the work being done on your components and we encourage you to witness any inspection we perform.
Furthermore, if an inspection is not feasible – we will tell you. Veracity gathers data to help inform the end user. We will not sell you services or inspections you do not need nor make recommendations that are not based on sound engineering data.

Veracity Detects Early Stages of Aircraft Structural Problems
Veracity Technology Solutions, an AGC Aerospace & Defense company, has inspected numerous metal and composite aircraft components to detect and monitor the progression of anomalies that could lead to structure failure as in the case of the recent Southwest Airlines aircraft.
“The goal of the testing is to ensure structural integrity,” said Gary Hensley, President of Veracity. “Various non-destructive inspection methods, such as eddy current (also referred to as electromagnetic testing) or Ultrasonic (UT) can provide the necessary information – the key is in analyzing the findings and also in recording the details for comparison in future inspections.”
Using field portable medical-grade ultrasonic technology or advanced eddy current methods, Veracity is able to detect and record the location of anomalies in exceptionally thin materials such as aircraft skin. The company has also been successful in identifying indications (potential defects which could lead to cracking) on aircraft test panels.
“In a recent project, we identified corrosion on the backside of aircraft panels where the rivets joined overlapping skin,” stated Kevin McKinley, Vice President of Development and Project Management. “We developed a three dimensional profile that enabled us to analyze and record the size and extent of the corrosion.”
Veracity’s proprietary software assigns a digital reference point that can be used on future inspections to track the evolution of anomalies that are caused by a variety of factors including corrosion and metal fatigue.
Last year, Veracity won the Aviation Week MRO of the Year Award for delivering an in-situ inspection system that provides UT information of the internal structure of an aircraft wing attachment fitting.

Veracity Reveals Improved Rotor Blade Inspection Solution
Veracity Technology Solutions (Veracity), an AGC Aerospace & Defense company, has successfully completed a proof of concept demonstration with the U.S. Army for a non-destructive inspection (NDI) process used for testing helicopter rotor blades.
“The U.S. Army selected Veracity to develop a more objective and trustworthy testing capability than they had,” said Gary Hensley, President of Veracity. “We were able to provide a proof of concept which can give the Army a viable solution for the inspection of rotor blades.”
The only utilized inspection method has been the “Tap Test” where a technician taps the surface of the rotor blade with a small hammer and then listens for any changes in the tapping sound which could indicate a possible defect. Even with the most skilled technician, this testing method is very subjective and can result in erroneous findings. The Veracity solution eliminates the subjectivity while maintaining the flexibility of being able to conduct the test either in the field or at a depot.
While Veracity has successfully tested rotor blades on the UH-60 and CH-47, this technology has a wide range of applications and has been successfully implemented in detecting and mapping delaminations in composite materials and corrosion in metal materials.

The company delivered two customized inspection units to Tinker AFB in September that are specifically designed to locate cracks in the KC-135 aircraft. An added benefit is that the new inspection replaces hazardous x-ray technology and will provide a much safer work environment.
“We are pleased that we had the opportunity to work with the government to improve this inspection process. Technicians have qualified and validated the Veracity solution and based on the results, this technology will not only save a significant amount of money, but the aircraft will be back in service faster – and with the high operational tempo of our military, that’s critical,” said Gary Hensley, President of Veracity.
The routine aft wing inspections that aircraft are required to undergo are often time consuming and expensive – requiring six workers up to eight hours to conduct the initial evaluation. Using the Veracity solution, two technicians can evaluate the aircraft’s condition in about an hour. Aircraft will be able to get to maintenance and repair sooner and the technicians can focus on other critical issues.
